Finding God in the Strangest Places

Mostly when I listen to music, I have my radio tuned to the Christian music station. I don’t listen to it exclusively, but I have found myself wanting to get away from all the sexual innuendos and utterly perverted lyrics that many groups use in the secular arena. But every now and then, when the Christian stations plays a song that bores me to tears or makes me feel that I would rather be pushing wood slivers under my fingernails, then I do the old seek and find.

Now for me, the words can make a break a song. I can hear a song once and if I like it, I will have a lot of it memorized for the next time that I hear it. Don’t get me wrong; I like the music too, but if the words really speak to me or the lyrics are very applicable to where I’m at in life or some emotions that I’m feeling, I will overlook some of the notes to like the song.

Have you gone to the pop stations and listen to the words of songs? It is amazing how many of the songs – especially love songs – that if viewed from a Christian perspective, can be songs for Jesus or God? It amazes me how often people will listen to these songs for a human relationship, but they will deny that they apply for any relationship with our heavenly Father.

Take Hoobastank’s “The Reason” for an example.

I'm not a perfect person
There's many things I wish i didnt do
But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you

I'm sorry that I hurt you
It's something I must live with everyday
And all the pain I put you through
I wish that I could take it all away
And be the one who catches all your tears
That's why I need you to hear

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you

and the reason is you
and the reason is you
and the reason is you

I not a perfect person
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I've found a reason for me
To change who I used to be
A reason to start over new
and the reason is you

I've found a reason to show
A side of me you didn't know
A reason for all that i do
And the reason is you

It is about the regret of one person for the way he treated his love. But when you see it through spiritual glasses, you can see that this is a perfect “understanding the love of Christ” song.

I’ve hurt you (with my sins), I wish that I could undo my past (but I can’t), so I’ll change who I used to be (a sinner) and have a new start on life and you Jesus are the reason for this change.

Or Lifehouse’s “Falling Even More In Love With You”:

Desperate for changing
Starving for truth
Closer to where I’ve started
Chasing after you

I'm falling even more in love with you
Letting go of all I've held onto
I'm standing here until you make me move
I'm hanging by a moment here with you

Forgetting all I'm lacking
Completely incomplete
I'll take your invitation
You take all of me

Now.. I'm falling even more in love with you
Letting go of all I've held onto
I'm standing here until you make me move
I'm hanging by a moment here with you

I'm living for the only thing I know
I'm running and not quite sure where to go
I don't know what I'm diving into
Just hanging by a moment here with you

There's nothing else to lose
Nothing left to find
There's nothing in the world
That could change my mind

There is nothing else…
There is nothing else…
There is nothing else

Desperate for changing
Starving for truth
Closer to where I’ve started
Chasing after you

I'm falling even more in love with you
Letting go of all I've held onto
I'm standing here until you make me move
I'm hanging by a moment here with you

I'm living for the only thing i know
I'm running and not quite sure where to go
I don't know what I'm diving into
Just hanging by a moment here with you
Just hanging by a moment(here with you)
Hanging by a moment…(here with you)
Hanging by a moment...(here with you)
Hanging by a moment here with you...

Or “Everywhere” by Michelle Branch:

Turn it inside out so I can see
The part of you that's drifting over me
And when I wake you're--you're never there
And when I sleep you're--you're everywhere
You're everywhere

Just tell me how I got this far
Just tell me why you're here and who you are
'Cause every time I look You're never there
And every time I sleep You're always there

'Cause you're everywhere to me
And when I close my eyes it's you I see
You're everything I know
That makes me believe I'm not alone
I'm not alone

I recognize the way you make me feel
It's hard to think that you might not be real
I sense it now, the water's getting deep
I try to wash the pain away from me
Away from me

'Cause you're everywhere to me
And when I close my eyes it's you I see
You're everything I know
That makes me believe I'm not alone
I'm not alone
I am not alone Whoa, oh, oooh, oh

And when I touch your hand
It's then I understand
The beauty that's within
It's now that we begin
You always light my way
I hope there never comes a day
No matter where I go
I always feel you so

'Cause you're everywhere to me
And when I close my eyes it's you I see
You're everything I know That makes me believe
I'm not alone

'Cause you're everywhere to me
And when I catch my breath
It's you I breathe
You're everything I know That makes me believe
I'm not alone

You're in everyone I see
So tell me
Do you see me?

So try it yourself. Take the time to listen to them and see what words can apply to our relationship with the Father. There are so many more than I can name or even think of right now.

But it goes to show you that you can find God in anything… if you will just look for Him.
